Basically, there are three options for brands seeking environmental and social responsiblity.  In an effort to be environmentally responsible, companies can use environmentally sound ingredients, packaging, and manufacturing techniques.  If the company strives to be socially responsible as well, they can take community members into consideration when making business decisions.  Lastly, companies can participate in corporate philanthropy.

Companies can choose to only use environmentally friendly ingredients, such as Square One Organic Vodka has done.  They only use local grown grains, print their label on bamboo based paper, encourage reuse of the bottle, and donate a portion of proceeds to non-political environmental causes. Similarly, Sunshine Vodka is made with GMO free grains which are from farmer owned co-ops in Vermont, where it is produced.  (http://voices.yahoo.com/socially-responsible-drinking-organic-vodka-gin-449824.html)

Companies can choose to dive further in, as Portland’s own Hopworks Brewery has.  Hopworks makes all decision keeping in mind environmental responsibility as well as the well being of the surrounding community members.  In doing so they ask three questions:

  1. Does the decision move us toward our mission?
  2. Is it clear to customer, employees, and suppliers how this moves us toward our mission?
  3. Will this increase our flexibility and/or resilience in the face of changing circumstances?
