Certainly businesses like Nike cannot be expected to develop a new profit language on their own. Government needs to play a central role in connecting profit maximizing business practice with environmental valuation. If the law were to require that companies periodically assess and submit reports on the environmental costs of their operations, we might expect companies to begin to manage and reduce those costs.

Efforts to quantify and incorporate environmental values into U.S. law and policy will ultimately help companies like Nike move towards a more truly sustainable business that unites, rather than divorces, sustainability and profit maximization. Without those efforts, achieving a true decoupling of scarce resources from profit may be a near-impossible task. Then again, Nike is not a company that balks at challenge. As one memorable Nike quote reminds us: “I believe in redefining my impossible.”
